Pride is joyful by nature. With its colour, music, chosen family, bodies moving freely through public space and people refusing to make themselves smaller. But Pride is also memory, protest and survival. Its celebration has always existed alongside a demand: the right for LGBTQ+ people to live openly, safely and without apology.
At Glisten Cosmetics, Pride is not simply another date in the beauty calendar. The LGBTQ+ community has helped shape the world our brand belongs to — not only by wearing colour, but by continually showing the beauty industry what colour, creativity and self-expression can mean.
Makeup has never been only decorative. For many LGBTQ+ people, it has been a language. It can reveal identity, test out a new version of the self, signal belonging or provide a moment of freedom before the rest of the world catches up. A painted eye, sharpened brow or bright lip can be playful, but it can also be deeply personal. Beauty allows people to decide how they are seen, and few communities understand the importance of that choice more intimately.
The LGBTQ+ community has changed beauty.
The modern beauty industry owes an enormous creative debt to LGBTQ+ artists, performers, makeup lovers and cultural communities. So much of what the industry now embraces — experimentation, transformation, graphic colour, exaggerated glamour and the refusal to follow traditional gender rules — has long been explored within queer spaces.
LGBTQ+ people have repeatedly expanded the possibilities of makeup. They have treated the face as a canvas, questioned who certain products are supposedly for and shown that beauty does not need to make someone look more conventional to make them feel more powerful.
Ideas once dismissed as too theatrical, too colourful or too strange regularly become mainstream beauty trends. Yet the people who developed, wore and championed those aesthetics do not always receive the same attention, protection or opportunity once the wider industry adopts them.
Celebrating Pride in beauty should therefore involve more than borrowing its visual language. Rainbow palettes and colourful campaigns mean very little without genuine respect for the people whose artistry made that freedom possible. The industry must recognise LGBTQ+ people not simply as consumers or sources of inspiration, but as artists, employees, founders, models and members of the community who deserve safety, visibility and meaningful support.
Glisten would not be the same brand without the LGBTQ+ community.
Our work is built around colour, creativity and expression without permission, values that queer makeup artists and beauty lovers embody every day. They have created with our products, introduced them to new audiences and continually shown us possibilities we might never have imagined alone. They do not simply wear Glisten; they help give it a life beyond the product itself.
Every graphic liner design, transformative drag look, experimental colour combination and moment of unapologetic self-expression contributes to the creative world around our brand. The LGBTQ+ community has supported us, challenged us and made our understanding of beauty broader. We are endlessly grateful for the trust, imagination and individuality people bring to Glisten.
That relationship should never feel one-sided. A community that contributes so much to beauty deserves more than appreciation expressed once a year. It deserves sustained support, meaningful representation and action that continues after Pride Month ends.
Since 2017, Glisten has raised over £90,000 for LGBTQ+ charities and organisations, including Not a Phase, Gendered Intelligence, Sahir and All Out, among others. Profits from our current Pride Liner support Not a Phase and its work with trans and gender-diverse adults.
These organisations do work that changes lives: providing advocacy, community, practical resources and spaces in which LGBTQ+ people can feel understood and protected. Supporting them matters because celebration alone cannot resolve the discrimination, isolation and inequality members of the community still experience.
This Pride, we are celebrating the people who have made beauty more imaginative, inclusive and alive. We are celebrating those who wear their identities loudly, those still discovering them and those who may not yet feel safe enough to be seen. We are remembering that joy can be an act of resistance, but that the right to joy must also be protected.
